A woman has been charged with assault by beating and criminal damage after a milkshake was thrown at Reform UK leader Nigel Farage following a campaign event in Clacton, Essex, on Tuesday.

Essex Police said Victoria Thomas Bowen, 25, will appear at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 2.

The force said the charges relate to an incident in which a drink was thrown at a man in the area of Marine Parade East, Clacton, at around 2.10pm on Tuesday.

A 44-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker has been released and will face no further action.

The Reform leader joked yesterday "my milkshake brings all the people to the rally" after he was doused in the banana drink by the bystander.

His joke referenced the 2003 song Milkshake by Kelis which has lyrics that include "my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard".

Mr Farage, who has been the target of a “milkshaking” incident in 2019, had addressed supporters at a rally in Clacton-on-Sea after announcing he would stand for election in the constituency.

The veteran Eurosceptic had been speaking to reporters in the pub after his rally at Clacton Pier.

He was then seen with the yellow drink splattered across his dark blue suit as he boarded his campaign bus.

In an interview last night, Mr Farage admitted the incident was "quite frightening" and claimed he was targeted "because I go out and meet the public".

Mr Farage had a £5.25 Five Guys banana and salted caramel milkshake thrown at him in 2019 during a campaign walkabout in Newcastle.

Culprit Paul Crowther was ordered by a court to pay compensation to Mr Farage following the act.

He admitted assault and criminal damage to a £239 lapel microphone on Mr Farage’s suit.

“Milkshaking” – the act of dousing public figures in milkshake – was officially recognised by Collins Dictionary the same year.
