If you love doner kebab you will know that essentially it is often quite fatty and full of calories. This one, on the other hand, is really low fat, has fewer calories and apparently pretty nice!

I am vegetarian, as you know, so I can only go on Stuart and Ben’s verdict but they both loved it. It is never going to be quite the same but I am sure you will enjoy it.

Kebab tips for this fakeaway doner kebab recipe

This Unofficial Slimming World kebab recipe can easily be adapted to make smaller or larger pieces of doner kebab meat. The only difficulty is the smaller the quantities the harder it will be to carve the kebab when it is cooked.

Avoid using frozen (even after defrosting) mince for this recipe. By this, I mean the mince which is bought frozen.

It genuinely just does not hold together as well. If you have bought fresh mince and frozen it this should be fine to use once defrosted.

Unofficial Slimming World kebab with lamb?

This Unofficial Slimming World kebab recipe uses beef mince as it is much easier to buy a syn-free version. If you prefer to use lamb mince there is no reason you can not do so.

More often than not however you will find yourself synning the lamb mince.

This is why I prefer to make this recipe with beef mince but the choice is yours.

Why does this recipe use beef mince?

Lamb mince can be enjoyed on Slimming World but it is usually synned as generally lamb is high in fat.

If you can find a 5% or less lamb mince though you can enjoy this for free like any other mince.

Approximate Syns in lamb mince

Lamb mince with 5% fat is syn free but really hard to find. This is because lamb is fatty meat and as such even with visible fat removed has a lot of fat in it.

If you can get 10% fat lamb then it is around 1-2 syns for 100g.

The Slimming World app currently has theTescochilled version as 1 syn per 100g but the Sainsbury chilled one at 2 syns per 100g.

I have no idea why and in all honesty I think sometimes it makes very little sense but there you go.

If you go for 15% fat lamb mince which as far as I can see is only available from Aldi then it is 3 syns per 100g.

Most lamb mince you will find is 20% fat, the syns in this again vary a little depending on the brand, Waitrose,Marks and SpencerandTescoare 5 syns per 100g, Morrisons (frozen), Ocado 5.5 syns per 100g yet the website also states that standard lamb mince of 20% fat is 4.5 syns.

The Aldi 23% fat lamb mince is listed as 6.5 syns per 100g.

On this basis, I will let you decide how to syn it if you use it in this unofficial Slimming World kebab recipe, or just use 5% beef mince as we do!

How to make this fakeaway kebab for vegetarians

As a vegetarian, I was keen to try this recipe and I must say I was impressed.

The effectiveness of the recipe will depend on the mince used. If you use quite wet mince that can be moulded together it will work much better.

I tried it with Quorn mince but it just doesn’t hold together. The flavours are still good but the mince will keep the consistency of mince rather than being like a meatloaf.

I assure you that you will enjoy this as a vegetarian even if you use mince and do not try and form it in a kebab shape, it is full of flavour and delicious!

Check out my selection of Quorn recipes, all perfect for all the family whether vegetarian or not, some are vegan too.

Syns in takeaway doner kebab

Doner meat from the takeaway is far from the healthiest meal to enjoy.

Slimming World syn 100g of lamb doner kebab meat at 9.5 syns (approx). It is important to remember though that would you actually be weighing it?

Slimming World also estimates that lamb doner meat with pizza bread, salad and sauces is around 33.5 syns.

Why you should avoid doner kebab from the takeaway

Of course, these syn values are average and it depends on how big the portions are at your takeaway, it could easily be more!

If your kebab shop happens to do particularly large portions you may unknowingly be having even more syns.

Would you be having it with a wholemeal pitta bread within your healthy extra b allowance?

If not these are extra syns with a white pitta bread being approximately 8 syns (approx) for a standard one or 11 syns (approx) for large white pitta bread.

These syns, of course, all add up so the choice is yours. I would definitely recommend a fakeaway kebab instead!

If you are not a fan of vegetables, you can pair them with small portions of meat in kebabs.

To manage it perfectly, use kabob grilling baskets for outdoor grills and enjoy your weight loss journey knowing you are still getting those vegetables in your diet.

As long as you eat the vegetables it doesn’t matter how you enjoy them so why not play around and find a way to incorporate your vegetables with your kebab and enjoy the meal?
