Determining the Potency of Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase- II in CVD Patients with Co-Morbidities

Globally, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality and it is estimated that CVD is a cause of approximately 29.6% of all the deaths worldwide. According to a research published in 2015 in American journal of Cardiology it is a time to “rebrand and reinvigorate” the cardiac rehabilitation program as the existing program appears to be neither financially practicable nor maintainable mainly due to affordability barriers. A Quasi experimental study was conducted on 40 participants whom were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease with comorbidities (diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia). Participants were asked to enroll in phase-II cardiac rehabilitation program on the recommendation of the cardiologist and were given intervention based on the guideline of American College of Sports medicine. Six weeks of supervised exercise protocol was conducted and its dosage was measured via Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type (FITT) protocol. While for determining the potency of phase-II...

Aims: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has proven to be effective and beneficial in middle-aged and older patients. However, solid data in large cohorts of elderly individuals are yet to be explored. This retrospective study investigated the general characteristics, outcomes, and the level of response of patients referred to CR over 13 consecutive years. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients admitted to Villa Pineta Rehabilitation Hospital for exercise-based CR from 2006 to 2018. The patients’ baseline characteristics and changes following CR in an upper-limb weightlifting test (ULW), 30-s sit-to-stand test (30STS), and the 6-min walking test (6MWT) with associated Borg-related dyspnea (D) and fatigue (F) were collected. We also calculated the number of individuals that reached the minimal clinically relevant change (MCRC) following CR for each outcome. Results: One thousand five hundred and fifty-one patients (70.2 ± 9.7 years, 66% men) with complete datasets were include...

Cardiac Rehabilitation for Patients With Coronary Artery Disease: A Practical Guide to Enhance Patient Outcomes Through Continuity of Care

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of disease burden worldwide. Referral to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a class I recommendation for all patients with CAD based on findings that participation can reduce cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, as well as improve functional capacity and quality of life. However, programme uptake remains low, systematic progression through the traditional CR phases is often lacking, and communication between health care providers is frequently suboptimal, resulting in fragmented care. Only 30% to 50% of eligible patients are typically referred to outpatient CR and fewer still complete the programme. In contemporary models of CR, patients are no longer treated by a single practitioner, but rather by an array of health professionals, across multiples specialities and health care settings. The risk of fragmented care in CR may be great, and a concerted approach is required to achieve continuity and optimise patient outcomes. 'Continui...

Methods: We examined data on 1910 patients with CHD who took part in two prospective cohort studies at the University Hospital of Halle (Saale) in the years 2007–2011. We contacted these patients again with a questionnaire to determine which ones had undergone rehabilitation. For patients who died before we could contact them, the attempt was made to obtain the dates and causes of death from the local authorities. The primary endpoint of was overall mortality.
